A nice thing about the internet is that we have infinite options. A bad thing about the internet is that we have infinite options. There is so much to digest at all times, and it can feel entertaining or informative or otherwise useful, but we don’t have the opportunity to sit with things anymore (unless we’re very intentional about it).
In everything—photography, painting, music, writing, you name its—there are people chasing trends and things homogenizing. But I think we also just are not truly processing so much of what we’re exposed to anymore.
I was talking with a friend the other day about music, and they made a similar comment about how songs don’t stick with them the way they used to, and they were trying to figure out what changed about the music industry. I think there’s genuinely fantastic music coming out right now (and art, and books, etc).
But there’s such an onslaught of stimulation at all times that we’re constantly moving from one thing to the next. We don’t marinate in things anymore, so they don’t affect us as much. Not to mention algorithms affecting who sees what and how and everything else.
There’s so much connection and so much disconnection at the same time.
I’m trying to make as much time for marination as possible. I want to sit with things. I want to sit with myself.
Sometimes that means missing out on other things. But it’s always been beautiful that we all have different experiences.
